MIDNIGHT MURDER OF DEMOCRACY

Woke up at 9 as usual thinking it to be another lazy day. As I switched on the TV to get my dreams off me, I am shocked to see the pictures and news streaming in. Peaceful protestors comprising of women, children and aged were being brutally scuttled by our own so-called elected members.

REASON-Holding peaceful protest against corruption.

No amount of reasoning can justify such kind of brutality. I am no fan of BABA, however the cause was just even if it was for political gains. Our remote controlled, soft spoken Mr. Prime Minister who normally talks of peace and calm when there is a terrorist attack, doesn't even blink a eye when it comes to using force against our own people.

Basic tenants of democracy are being shaken-

  1. Freedom to speech.
  2. Freedom to express.
  3. Right to peaceful protest.
Today headline inflation is hovering around 9%, petrol and diesel prices are touching the sky . There are no basic facilities like proper roads and hospitals for a country which tom toms its 9% growth. We want a place in the world stage as a permanent member of UNSC but we don't have the spine to convict and hang people who attack our parliament. Such is hypocrisy in the country that Kashmiri seperatist are allowed to hold rally in the capital but common citizens are beaten up for protesting against corruption. It becomes obvious now that the government and the rich and corrupt are hand in glove or else what is the reason for the government to not ban corruption. Just imagine what all the black money brought from tax haven like Mauritius and Switzerland can do for the poor in our country. Our farmers don' t have money to buy seeds and irrigation water, our youth don't have enough colleges to pursue our dreams, our monies are being looted by ministers who say that there has been absolute zero loss to the exchequer when it has been proved otherwise. Such is the insensivity of the government that they don't even feel the need to explain as to where they stand in terms of various issues plaguing the country.

Watching tv, sitting in my living room, I feel bitter and helpless. The adrenaline is pumping and there is a desire to do something to raise a voice but am crippled when I think about how ordinary I am and the family compulsions. I believe that it must be same for all of us 20 somethings. It got me thinking about what I can do to make myself count and the only way I could think about was to raise awareness amongst our peers about various issues and exercising our vote. A government which is weak, cannot protect its sovereignity, is corrupt and attacks its own people should be voted out.
